California Housing & Youth Services, Inc.
a California Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation.

California Housing and Youth Services, is a private not-for-profit that provides support services to the youths of our community in addition to providing affordable housing to low, very low, and moderate income families, seniors, individuals and those with special needs.

At the age of 18 a foster child is "emancipated" from the State of California and many enter into early adulthood, completely alone.  The statistics surrounding the future of these youths are not encouraging. 40-50% will experience homelessness, 25% will be incarcerated, 60% will live below the poverty line.

Even for those who obtain and maintain jobs, their access to higher education is severely limited.  Of all the emancipated youths aging out to the foster care system, and have a high school diploma or GED, 70% want to attend college, only 10% enroll in college and less than 1% graduate from a four year institution.

Our focus is to assist youths through their transition to independent living through mentoring and training services.  These services will be provided to youths aging out the foster care system, those that are coming from juvenile detention centers, and youths that may be at risk of becoming homeless.

CHYS believes that all young adults should have the opportunity to succeed in life.  Through our mentoring program, our goal is to assist them to complete high school, participate in job training, find housing and encourage them to acquire a higher education. We believe that the individualized approach to this issue will change the future of these young people.

The Challenge for "Aged-Out" Foster Teens

When I was in foster care, it didn’t seem like I had any choices or any future. All kids deserve families. The need a family, to have someone, this is a father, this is a mother they need a family so they can believe in themselves and grow up to be somebody. This is a big deal people don’t realize. I wish everybody could understand.
